Venue: Zen Metro, 73 Cornwall Street, B3 2DF; website
Choice: Chargrilled jumbo prawn (£8.95) Chooser: Waitress
If you like Ashas, the chances are, Zen Metro is going to be your cup of hot stuff. Which, as it is owned by the same people, makes a lot of sense. This time giving Thai and South East Asian food some high-end love, the quality of the ingredients feels like the ardent focus here, with the kitchen barely breaking even on a number of the dishes. It's fitting, then, that such a simple comestible — a colossal prawn — swooned its way into the gastronomic side of our heart. Obviously cooked to perfection, the fine young specimen is served in its shell (but remains first-date easy to retrieve), and leaves you with room sufficient for the team's red curry. While it certainly wasn't hot (as per the menu) when we tried it, the coconutty beef-based dish was velvety and subtle and moreish. One to try before the prices go up. Menu
